Michael Rosen’s Visit to Highfield
Last Friday (18th September) we had a visit from the brilliant Michael Rosen. The children were very excited as they all knew his poems off by heart. He started his day with a show for years 3-6 and as well as going through some of his well know poems, such as Don’t breathe in Class and Chocolate cake also told us stories about himself, including being told off by his father with his brother mimicking him while he was doing his best not to laugh. Both the children and the adults were enthralled at seeing poetry being acted out in such an entertaining way.
Michael then led a workshop with the year 5 children, who were inspired by his poetry to create their own. They then had the opportunity to perform it with him, which I am sure will be a cherished memory for a long time to come.
In the afternoon Michael performed various poems to the children to Years 1 and 2. He finished with ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’. The children joined in with the words and actions and everyone enjoyed the show. The children saw how poetry could be brought alive and how language and can be used creatively.
At the end of the day was the book sale and Michael happily signed everyone’s book.
Michael later tweeted ‘Great day in a wonderful school: Highfield Primary School in Winchmore Hill. Thanks to all.’
This was a wonderful experience that I’m sure, for all those involved, will never be forgotten.
Please look at Michael’s website http://www.michaelrosen.co.uk/index.htm to find out more information about him.
