Welcome to Art and Design at Highfield!
As a school, we believe that art lessons should be engaging, experimental and give all the children the opportunity to express themselves. To achieve this, we follow an innovative creative curriculum that incorporates cross curricular and creative Art teaching.
During art lessons, every child is given the opportunity to experiment and use a variety of different materials, including sketching pencils, printing inks, spray paint, fabric and pastel. Our curriculum also encourages children to enhance their art skills to ensure a steady progression of skills throughout their school life.
National Curriculum Outlines
The new Art and Design National Curriculum has seen a more streamlined outline of age related expectations. The expectations for each Key Stage are outlined below.
Key stage 1
Pupils should be taught:
- To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
- To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.
- To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.
- To learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.
Key stage 2
Pupils should be taught:
- To develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
- To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
- To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials.
- To learn about great artists, architects and designers in history.
Art and Design at Highfield
The artwork created at Highfield often follows the children’s own interests and forges strong links with the current topics they are studying in class. This cross curricular approach not only fosters the children’s enjoyment for the subject but also enhances their own learning journeys.

As a school we believe that it is important to showcase the children’s artwork within the school environment. We are proud of the artwork the children have created and have many beautiful art displays within our school.
Every room at Highfield has been given an artist’s name. The children have chosen a wide range of different artists, both male and female and from all parts of the world. Throughout the year, children will learn about these artists and get the opportunity to create artwork inspired by their class artist.
This year Highfield School has been very lucky and has been given the opportunity to work with Environmental artist Cath Rive. Last year, Cath worked with Year 1 and used the school’s wildlife space and its creatures to inspire a beautiful installation in the Year 1 outdoor space. The Year 1’s created a stunning mini beast hotel and made story sticks to detail their findings.
This year, Year 4 have been working with Cath and delving deeper into the seasonality and structure of leaves. During their sessions with Cath, the children have been experimenting with colour mixing, printing leaves, making leave imprints using clay and experimented with photography!
Miss Modeste will be running an Art again this year, planned to start in the Spring term and run throughout the year. Children across the school will be chosen to take part in the afterschool club. In the club, children will focus on artists from different eras and will experiment with the artist’s style to create their own unique artwork.
Things to try at home!
Daytrips to Art Galleries:
- Camden arts centre have free make and do art workshops for children every Sunday.
- The Tate Modern and The National Portrait gallery and free to visit and have many interesting pieces of art.
Art and Craft Activities:
- Crystal Names: Mixing Science and Art, bend pipe cleaners into letters to spell your name and watch them grow into crystals overnight in a borax solution.
- Nail Polish Marble Art: Put those old forgotten nail varnishes to good use and use them as another art material that children can paint with!
- Artsy Collages: Recycle those old magazines and allow children to cut out their favourite images to create stunning collages filled with things that interest them!
