Art and Design

At Highfield, art lessons are taught to encourage children’s creativity, to engage and inspire their learning. Every child is given the opportunity to use and experiment with a variety of different materials, including pencil, paint, spray paint, fabric and pastel.

Throughout the school year, children learn to master different skills, to plan and create their own pieces of art.

Lessons are often cross curricular and linked to other subjects.

Below are examples of what type of art children will do in each year group:

Year 1- Beach – still life paintings

Year 2- Diwali pots – clay work

Year 3- Egyptian Art – hieroglyphs

Year 4- Anglo-Saxon Art & Culture – make own piece of jewellery

Year 5- Viking art & design – create own motif/sculpture

Year 6- Design a prop for end of school play

Class artists

Every class at Highfield has chosen an artist for their classroom to be named after.

Children chose a wide range of different artists, both male and female and from all parts of the world. Throughout the year, children will learn about this artist and get the opportunity to re create artwork in the style of the artist.

Art and DT club

Miss MacIver and Miss Modeste are planning to run an Art and DT club again this year, planned to start in the summer term. Last year children from Year 1 to 6 were chosen to take part in the afterschool club. In the club, children learnt about the artist Henri Rousseau and painted self portraits in the style of the artist.

Artist workshops

This year, Highfield School is very lucky to have the opportunity to participate in art workshops. Children will learn about 15 Famous Artists and have the opportunity to make their own piece of art, more information to follow soon!
